Senior Backend Engineer

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services, APIs, and data integration layers
• Author and defend engineering design documents (EDDs)
• Design and optimize database schemas and queries
• Meet project goals while maintaining quality and paying down technical debt
• Serve as the go-to person for technologies in the domain and evaluate industry developments
• Hold the engineering bar in code and design reviews
• Write clean, maintainable code following coding standards
• Contribute to testing infrastructure and increase backend module coverage
• Verify AI-assisted changes to the standard of hand-written code
• Define alerting, SLIs, and SLOs and advance backend monitoring
• Handle uncovered incidents, improve runbooks, lead technical incident response, and write RCAs
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues across development and production environments
• Own domain roadmap delivery and participate in quarterly and sprint planning
• Anticipate blockers and escalate with impact assessments and proposed options
• Collaborate with Product and business stakeholders to clarify requirements and define feature success
• Deliver domain solutions and own service design and implementation end to end
• Maintain accurate tickets and complete documentation
• Work across multiple time zones using asynchronous communication
• Mentor junior and mid-level engineers
• Technically lead and mentor Backend Engineers building or extending complex modules

• Fluency in English, including clear written communication
• Hands-on experience designing, building, and operating applications in Java, Kotlin, and/or Scala
• Experience with a web framework such as Spring
• Track record of leading and delivering multiple domain-significant projects validated in production
• Experience with large-scale consumer applications on AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure using microservices architecture
• Subject-matter expertise in own domain and familiarity with adjacent domains and wider company architecture
• Experience designing services and dependencies for security, maintainability, operability, and scale
• Experience authoring and defending engineering design documents (EDDs)
• Expert knowledge of REST API design and development for mobile and web
• Strong relational database experience with MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Oracle, or MS SQL
• Strong non-relational database experience with Cassandra, Redshift, DynamoDB, or HDFS
• Experience defining alert thresholds, SLIs, SLOs, and telemetry
• Experience with graceful degradation and monitoring new features
• Experience co-owning Acceptance Tests coverage decisions with SDET
• Knowledge of ISO-27001, ISO-27701, and OWASP secure coding practices
• Ability to remediate vulnerabilities within established SLAs
• AI fluency, including defining acceptance criteria, building reusable context assets, prompts, and skills, and verifying AI-generated code
• Expert proficiency in Agile development
• Ability to prioritize and communicate well in a fast-paced environment
