Senior Engineer, Backend

• Collaborate with Designers, Product Managers, and Software Engineers to build and maintain user experience, accessibility, and development feasibility for websites, applications, and supporting digital spaces.
• Design and implement innovative solutions for presenting data and content across websites, mobile apps, and other platforms.
• Adhere to JoVE’s brand standards across websites, supporting digital spaces, and third-party platforms.
• Stay updated on web standards, changes, and web design and development trends.
• Contribute to engineering excellence, including automated unit testing.
• Collaborate with stakeholders and developers on project design and implementation, maintaining standards and creating a reusable codebase.
• Complete tasks independently and on time while meeting requirements and expectations.
• Explain and whiteboard complex technical issues to audiences with varying technical expertise.
• Debug software components and identify code defects for remediation.
• Assist in automating deployments to development and other environments.

• 7+ years of experience building scalable, data-driven backend systems and APIs.
• At least 2 years of experience in a technical leadership role, leading and mentoring engineering teams.
• Strong proficiency in server-side programming (Node.js) - Must have.
• Familiarity with frontend technologies: React, JavaScript/TypeScript, CSS.
• Strong understanding of system design, data architecture, and microservices or modular monoliths.
• Skilled in designing and implementing RESTful APIs and integrating with third-party services and external SDKs.
• Experience with event-driven systems, asynchronous processing, and message queues (Kafka, SNS/SQS, RabbitMQ, etc.).
• Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases, including PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and Redis, with ability to optimize queries and model complex data relationships.
• Solid experience with cloud-native architecture using AWS (serverless, ECS/Fargate, Lambda, S3, CloudFormation, etc.) or equivalent platforms.
• Demonstrated understanding and implementation of SOLID and DRY software design principles with SaaS and multi-tenancy application development.
• Familiarity with Agile Scrum software development and related collaboration and issue-tracking tools such as JIRA and Rally.
• Experience working in a Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery model, including GitHub and CI pipeline automation tools.
• Ability to triage and resolve incidents and lead incident investigations.
