Junior Software Engineer

• Build full-stack features using React, Node.js, and PostgreSQL
• Develop React components, Node.js endpoints, and PostgreSQL queries
• Write clean code following existing codebase patterns
• Write tests for completed code
• Track down and fix defects, escalating deeper issues when needed
• Use Claude Code and Cursor as part of the daily development workflow
• Build accessible and responsive interfaces meeting WCAG 2.1 AA standards
• Use the shared design system
• Participate in design reviews and code reviews
• Raise sprint estimates and blockers early
• Treat security as part of the definition of done
• Learn how SOC 2, PCI, and GDPR affect sensitive workflows
• Learn the needs of clerks, courts, and citizens to improve engineering decisions
• Work on shared platform services including reporting, payments, search, authentication, messaging, and file handling

• 0–2 years of professional software development experience; internships, apprenticeships, bootcamp work, open-source contributions, and portfolio work count
• Working knowledge of JavaScript
• HTML and CSS fundamentals
• Exposure to a modern front-end framework; React preferred, or Angular or Vue.js
• Exposure to Node.js or another back-end language
• Understanding of RESTful APIs
• Foundational SQL and relational data concepts
• PostgreSQL knowledge
• Git proficiency, including branching, pull requests, and resolving merge conflicts
• Methodical problem-solving and judgment to ask for help
• Clear written and verbal communication, including asynchronous communication
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
• Experience with automated testing tools such as Jest is a bonus
• AWS, CI/CD pipelines, and containers exposure is a bonus
• Experience with AI-assisted development tools on a real project is a bonus
• Shipped software used by others is a bonus
• Interest in civic technology or experience with local government is a bonus
