Java Staff Engineer

• Own the technical direction of a value stream
• Translate architectural principles into practical standards and scalable, maintainable solutions
• Simplify systems, consolidate technologies, and reduce dependencies
• Enable autonomous teams and independent, low-risk releases
• Lead the migration toward Java and establish best practices
• Grow Java expertise across engineering teams
• Set standards for code quality, testing, reliability, security, and observability
• Foster a “you build it, you run it” culture
• Coach and mentor Tech Leads through architectural guidance, reviews, and knowledge sharing
• Drive development and operation of components and shared services
• Partner with Product, Delivery Leadership, Principal Engineers, and the CISO on strategic decisions
• Guide three to four engineering teams toward scalable, reliable, and maintainable solutions

• Extensive hands-on experience with Java and its ecosystem
• Experience designing, building, and operating production backend systems
• Strong experience with cloud technologies, Docker, Kubernetes, and distributed, event-driven architectures
• Azure experience is a plus
• Proven track record driving complex architectural changes across multiple systems and teams
• Ability to balance technical excellence with pragmatic decisions
• Strong focus on clean code, testing, observability, reliability, and continuous improvement
• Openness to working across Ruby and TypeScript
• Ability to align teams, communicate technical decisions clearly, and inspire without formal authority
• Collaborative mindset and enthusiasm for coaching engineers and developing Tech Leads
• Fluent English
• German proficiency at minimum C1 level
• Must reside in Germany
